| Tips for What to Wear |

I leave for work very early in the morning due to a long commute. I
tried to set up as many things the night before so that the morning
routine will go smoothly.
Each evening I am faced with the same dilemma of what to wear to work the next day. I like to pick out my outfit the night before so that I can press it and make sure that it is ready to slip into the next day. My husband cannot believe the time I take deciding what to wear. I explained that I like to look professional even though the dress code at our agency is business casual. About two weeks ago I stopped by my husband’s office to exchange vehicles with him and I could not believe the way most of the workers were dressed. They also have a business casual dress code, but most of the workers were in jeans. It was obvious that not very many of the people spent anytime planning what to wear. The director of the agency wears jeans and flannel shirts in the winter and t-shirts in the summer, so the rest of the workers follow suit. They are a social service agency that goes into people’s homes, are in schools and the courtroom. My husband always dresses very well, but he is definitely in the minority. I am friends with one of the women that works there. She commented that it was so nice to not to have to worry about what to wear. She used to dress very well and wore make up and had every hair in place. Now she wears a pair of jeans and a shirt and does not bother with make up. This casual attire makes her seem like she does not care about what type of job she is doing, although I know that she had a good reputation. I have heard that the service delivery from the agency has declined since this director has taken over. I think that the casual attitude that he has towards what to wear is also causing his staff to take too casual of an attitude towards their work with clients. He seems to be a very bright person yet being so casual about running a business is causing a poor reputation in the area. Some people think that I place too much of an emphasis on what to wear, but I know that you get treated with greater respect when you look and act like a professional. If you present too casual of an attitude through your appearance people are less likely to take you seriously. |
