The Beauty and Splendor of Ball Gowns E-mail
As if carved from Gone with the Wind, Civil War ball gowns are timeless in their elegance. What little girl never dreamed of dressing up in such a beautiful way. Winter formal gowns in their own right offer this beautiful elegance to any refined young lady. It can make you feel like a princess, torn from the fairy tales.

As in the story of Cinderella, ball gowns are critical to every fairytale fantasy. So choosing the right attire for your special occasion is an important task indeed.

Whatever your shape or size, you'll surely find a ball gown that's just perfect for you.  When selecting one, don't try to be trendy or hip. The main idea of a ball gown is to reflect the most feminine part of your personality. All ball gowns have the classic large bell shaped bottom, but the bodices can vary widely.

Do you want to create an impression of wealth and elegance or do you want to show off your figure in an alluring way, or both? To put your perfect look together, there's much to be considered.

If you want the elegant well-to-do look, the first thing you want to pay attention to is the material, not the cut.  Some gowns have lace  bodices with skirts of other materials. Some have the entire gown of the same fabric. Ball gowns made of satin are the truly classical, and impart a sense of wealth and grace.

Some materials not occurring in nature can provide a modern twist to the classic ball gown. Metallic materials constructed from silk thread over polyester shimmer in all lights.

If your ball gown is rich in fabric, then cotton won't do at all. If you dare make your own then you can search out evening gowns patterns from fashion sources found on the Internet and in fashion magazines.

If there are many curves and dips in the material of the skirt, then opt for translucent or shiny material. Silk is only good with an A-line ball gown.  Embroidery should be used sparingly, usually only on the top. All over embroidery tends to look overdone.

The cut of the gown is the next issue to address.  You're choice depends on whether you're going for a classical look or a modern one. The classical look is best suited to those with prominent curves and well defined figures.

Classical ball gowns are usually off-the-shoulder, have cap sleeves, and have an accompanying sash or shoulder wrap. They usually aren't zipped, but laced or buttoned. Classical gowns usually have a matching bodice and skirt.

The waist is slightly cinched, with the hooks concealed in the back. The bust line is decorated with folds of material that match the shoulder sash. The bodice should have some kind of embellishment, like embroidery or an embossed print.

If you are a thin or petite woman, modern styled ball gowns may be the best pick for you.  Some  have a tank top with spaghetti straps and zipper in the back. The latter is flattering to very thin or petite women, but can detract from appearance on a fuller woman.

Modern ball gowns usually have lace tops which contrasts with the smooth material of the bell shaped bottom. These usually aren't accompanied by shoulder sashes, although faux fur sashes  are sometimes used.

Make sure to choose a cut that compliments your figure, and choose materials that are in line with the look you're trying to achieve.
